Rocket Ammo

One rocket, one crater, one very satisfied man in a Hawaiian shirt.

Rocket Ammo

Rocket Ammo is the standard ammunition pickup for the Rocket Launcher in the Serious Sam franchise, developed by Croteam. Represented in-game as a small cluster of rockets or a single rocket shell, it replenishes the player's explosive ordnance supply during the gauntlet of alien-horde combat that defines the series. It is one of the core ammo types alongside pistol rounds, shotgun shells, and other weapon-specific pickups.

As a mid-tier weapon fuel, Rocket Ammo sits between the humble pistol and the heavy machine guns in the player's arsenal. The rockets it feeds deal explosive area-of-effect damage, making it a go-to choice when Sam is swarmed by Kraal's insectoid legions across the desert and urban battlegrounds of the series.

Lore & Background

In the world of Serious Sam, the Rocket Launcher is standard-issue hardware for anyone who wants to level a room full of alien soldiers. The Rocket Ammo that fuels it is manufactured by the same defense contractors that supply the rest of Sam's loadout, and it shows up in crates, on the ground after clearing out a base, or as a fixed pickup point along a level's path. Croteam designed the pickup to be visually distinct—a small, recognizable rocket shape—so players can spot it from across a courtyard without pausing.

The lore positioning is deliberately unpretentious. There is no mysterious origin for the rockets; they are simply the heavy ordnance that a one-man army needs when the sky fills with flying saucers and the ground splits open to spew out thousands of chitinous soldiers. Sam grabs a handful of Rocket Ammo the way a plumber grabs a wrench: because the job demands it and he is not about to do it with a pistol.

Across the series, the Rocket Launcher and its ammo have remained a constant. Whether Sam is defending a small island in The First Encounter, holding a desert highway in The Second Encounter, or punching through a medieval-alien hybrid in BFE, the rocket is there, and the ammo to keep it fed is scattered through every corridor and open field.

In Their Own Story

The sun hammered the white sand of the outpost as Sam waded through a field of shattered alien carapaces. His shotgun was dry, his pistol was a joke against the swarm pouring over the ridge, and the Rocket Launcher in his right hand was down to two rounds. He could hear them clicking, chittering, a thousand legs finding purchase on the rubble.

Then he saw it. A small rocket, half-buried in the dirt beside a crumpled supply crate, its fins catching the glare. He snatched it up. The HUD ticked over. Four rockets. Maybe five. Enough.

He raised the launcher, squeezed the trigger, and watched the first rocket arc through the air with a lazy, thunderous whistle. The detonation turned a wall of soldiers into a brief, orange nothing. The second followed. The third. The ridge went quiet.

Sam racked the launcher, spat on his glove, and kept walking.

Reader's Guide

The Rocket Ammo pickup is a small, instantly recognizable rocket shell—typically a short cylindrical body with a pointed nose and a set of fins—often shown in a cluster of two or three. It glows or pulses subtly on the ground to draw the eye. Picking it up is automatic on contact, and the HUD ammo counter for the Rocket Launcher ticks up accordingly.

The Rocket Launcher itself has a heavy, deliberate firing feel. Each rocket launches with a deep, bassy thump and a visible exhaust puff, then arcs in a slow, slightly lobbed trajectory before detonating. The area-of-effect damage makes it punishing against clustered enemies and effective against armored targets, though the slow rate of fire and the projectile's travel time demand lead and spacing. It is not a spray-and-pray weapon; it is a timing weapon.

Rocket Ammo is available from early in the campaign in the core titles, appearing as a fixed pickup or a drop from cleared enemies. It is not exclusive to one game—it recurs across The First Encounter, The Second Encounter, and later entries. Between versions, the visual model and the exact ammo-per-pickup quantity have shifted slightly, but the core role—replenishing your explosive ordnance mid-fight—has stayed constant.

Fan verdict: a crowd-pleaser. Rockets are the weapon people remember, and the ammo that keeps them flying is half the fun. It is not a niche pick; it is the pick that makes the level feel like a level.
