Dual 9mm

Two pistols, twice the noise, zero hesitation—Sam's favorite way to say hello to a horde.

Dual 9mm

The Dual 9mm is a dual-wielded sidearm in the Serious Sam first-person shooter franchise, developed by Croteam. It consists of two 9mm semi-automatic pistols fired simultaneously, one in each hand, and serves as one of the earliest dedicated weapons a player picks up after the starting pistol. It occupies the 'fast but fragile' slot in Sam's absurdly oversized arsenal, trading raw stopping power for a high rate of fire.

In the Serious Sam 2 / The Second Encounter line of games, the Dual 9mm is a distinct weapon pickup separate from the single 9mm pistol, rewarding players who prefer a spray-and-pray approach during the swarm-heavy early levels before heavier firearms become available.

Lore & Background

In the world of Serious Sam, the Dual 9mm is less a military-issue sidearm and more a statement of intent. Where a single 9mm pistol whispers, the dual configuration roars. Sam's approach to combat has always been 'more guns, faster,' and the Dual 9mm embodies that philosophy at its most accessible: no shoulder stock, no sight alignment, just two barrels pointed at whatever is trying to eat you.

The weapon's design reflects the franchise's broader aesthetic—bright, cartoonish, and deliberately over-the-top. The pistols are chunky, almost toy-like in proportion, and the dual-wield animation gives Sam a swagger that a single-handed draw simply cannot match. In the hands of a player mowing through the first wave of enemies, the rapid pitter-patter of twin 9mm rounds is the sound that defines the early Serious Sam experience.

Croteam has treated the Dual 9mm as a bridge weapon: it is more capable than the starting pistol but clearly a stopgap before the Uzi, the MP5, or the shotgun arrive. Its place in the weapon progression is a deliberate pacing tool, giving the player a taste of dual-wielding excitement before the real firepower kicks in.

In Their Own Story

The first wave hit at dawn, or what passed for dawn under the perpetual orange haze. Sam didn't bother checking the magazine count. He never did. Two pistols, one in each hand, and the world reduced to a rhythm: pull, pull, pull. The 9mm rounds chewed through the front rank of whatever was shambling toward him, and the recoil kicked both wrists in a syncopated stutter that felt less like shooting and more like a double-pump jackhammer.

He ducked behind a concrete barrier, racked both slides, and grinned. The next wave was already rounding the corner. He had maybe forty rounds left. Plenty. It was always plenty.

Reader's Guide

Silhouette and firing feel: The Dual 9mm presents as two chunky, slightly oversized 9mm pistols held in a wide two-handed stance. On trigger pull, both barrels fire in near-perfect simultaneity, producing a sharp double-clang with a visible muzzle flash on each side. The recoil pattern is a tight, fast vertical kick that is easy to control at close range but drifts noticeably at mid-range. The animation is snappy—no slow reload, just a quick double-rack between bursts.

Damage profile: Each pistol deals modest per-round damage, but the effective DPS is respectable for an early-game weapon. It excels against single-target enemies at close quarters and against swarms where raw volume of fire matters more than penetration. It will struggle against heavily armored foes that appear later in the campaign.

Ammunition: Standard 9mm. Magazine capacity per pistol is small, so sustained fire requires frequent reloads of both hands.

First drop: The Dual 9mm appears as a weapon pickup in the early levels of the Serious Sam 2 / Second Encounter campaign, typically within the first one or two stages, before the player encounters heavier firearms.

Fan verdict: A crowd-pleaser for the first ten minutes of a run. The dual-wield feel is pure fun, but it is quickly outclassed by the Uzi and shotgun. Most players treat it as a 'satisfying early toy' rather than a loadout staple.

Version notes: Minor visual and animation tweaks were applied in the HD remaster; core stats remained broadly consistent between the original 2004 release and the HD version.
