Medium UFO
A hovering disc of alien firelight, stitching the sky with plasma rounds.
The Medium UFO is a mid-sized flying disc enemy in the Serious Sam franchise, most prominently featured in Serious Sam 2. It belongs to the broad alien invasion force that the player must fight through across the series' levels. As a mid-tier aerial unit, it sits between the smaller, faster UFOs and the larger, more heavily armed variants in the enemy hierarchy.
Its role in combat is that of a hovering ranged harasser: it maintains altitude, tracks the player, and fires plasma projectiles in bursts while weaving through the environment. It is rarely encountered alone, typically appearing in loose formations with other UFOs and ground-based alien soldiers.

Lore & Background
The alien armada that descends upon Earth in the Serious Sam series is not a single species but a layered military force. The Medium UFOs form part of the aerial support tier: not the flagship-class vessels that loom over cities, but the workhorse drones that keep pressure on advancing ground troops. They are mass-produced, expendable, and designed to be shot down in volleys rather than engaged one-on-one.
Their disc hulls are smooth and metallic, with a glowing undercarriage that pulses in time with their weapon systems. They do not land. They do not speak. They simply hold position above a chokepoint, a bridge, or an open plaza, and pour suppressive fire until the player's ammunition or health runs out. In the narrative framing of the series, they are one face among many in an invasion that spans continents, and Sam's task is to punch through each wave before the next one arrives.
Across the franchise, the UFO concept recurs as a visual shorthand for the alien threat from above. Whether in the earlier entries or the later ones, the silhouette of a glowing disc tracking a lone shotgun-wielding man remains one of the series' most recognizable combat images.
In Their Own Story
The sky over the coliseum was already crowded when the Medium UFO drifted in from the east, its under-glow painting the ancient stone in sickly green. It banked slowly, catching the updraft off the broken columns, and Sam felt the first plasma bolt sing past his ear before the second one cracked a chunk out of the wall behind him. He raised the shotgun, squeezed, and the disc shuddered, trailing sparks. It did not fall. It rolled, reoriented, and the glow beneath it intensified. Three more discs peeled off the cloud bank to its left, fanning out in a lazy arc. Sam switched to the SMG and walked forward, the sound of his boots on marble the only thing left in the world.
Reader's Guide
Visual identity and swarm role: The Medium UFO is a flat, disc-shaped craft with a smooth metallic upper hull and a brightly glowing underside. It reads clearly against the sky and is easy to pick out at range. In a swarm it occupies the mid-altitude layer—higher than ground troops, lower than the large flagship-class UFOs—and its job is sustained ranged pressure rather than a single devastating hit.
Attack pattern: It hovers in a slow, weaving figure-eight or circular patrol, keeping roughly 15–25 metres of horizontal distance from the player. It fires short bursts of plasma bolts (typically 2–3 rounds) in a straight line toward the player's current position, then pauses briefly before the next burst. It does not charge, does not dive, and does not lock on with a targeting beam. Its aim is lead-based, so strafing perpendicular to its line of fire is effective.
Where it appears: The Medium UFO is a staple of Serious Sam 2, appearing in outdoor and semi-outdoor levels where there is open sky. It is usually grouped with small UFOs and ground soldiers. Later entries in the franchise retain the disc-UFO archetype, though naming and stats shift between titles.
Variants and counters: Small and large UFO variants share the same silhouette at different scales. The large version has more health and fires heavier projectiles. A shotgun or SMG at close range shreds the Medium quickly; from distance, a rifle or rocket launcher is more efficient. Because it hovers in place, it is an easy target for the player's heavier weapons when the player can secure a clear line of sight.
Did You Know?
- The Medium UFO, like other UFOs in the series, never lands or touches the ground during combat; it is a purely aerial unit.
- In Serious Sam 2, UFOs are typically encountered in loose groups of three to six, mixed with ground-based alien soldiers, rather than as solo encounters.
- The disc-shaped UFO silhouette is one of the most visually recurring enemy shapes across the entire Serious Sam franchise, appearing in multiple titles in some form.
- Because the Medium UFO hovers in a predictable pattern, it is one of the easier enemies to take down with area-of-effect weapons like the rocket launcher or shotgun at close range.
