The Serious Engine is the proprietary game engine developed by Croatian studio Croteam, purpose-built to power the Serious Sam first-person shooter franchise. Debuting with Serious Sam: The First Encounter in 2001, the engine was designed from the ground up around a single core ambition: rendering and simulating enormous hordes of enemies in real time without the frame-rate collapse that would cripple a generic engine under the same load. Every iteration of the engine—from the original through Serious Engine 4—has been shaped by that constraint, making large-scale, chaotic combat the franchise's mechanical signature.

The engine saw four major generations across the series' core titles. Serious Engine 4 powered Serious Sam 3: BFE (2011), the last major release built on Croteam's in-house technology.
