Ground Trooper
The faceless grunt that fills every corridor, every plaza, every doomed outpost.
The Ground Trooper is the most basic infantry unit in the Serious Sam franchise, serving as the foundational enemy type that players encounter from the very first level onward. These human soldiers form the backbone of the enemy army, appearing in dense swarms alongside heavier weapons platforms and alien creatures to overwhelm the player through sheer numbers.

Lore & Background
The Ground Trooper represents the expendable foot-soldier of the General's campaign to conquer Earth. Dressed in utilitarian military gear and armed with a standard-issue assault rifle, these soldiers are designed to be thrown in overwhelming numbers rather than to pose an individual tactical threat. In the narrative of the first two Serious Sam titles, they are the first type of enemy the player encounters, establishing the core loop of the game: a horde of identical, low-health shooters that must be mowed down before the heavier threats arrive.
In Their Own Story
The dust on the plaza had barely settled from the last volley when the next wave crested the ridge. Sam counted them without thinking—twelve, maybe fifteen—moving in a loose wedge, rifles up, boots crunching on the broken tile. They didn't run. They never ran. They just walked, steady and patient, like they had all the time in the world and Sam didn't. He racked the shotgun, watched the first one's chest bloom red, and let the rest keep coming. They always kept coming.
Reader's Guide
Visual identity: The Ground Trooper is a stocky human soldier in dark, utilitarian tactical armor with a helmet or cap, carrying a standard assault rifle held at the ready. In the swarm, they are the most numerous and visually uniform enemy type, easily distinguished from the larger, more exotic alien creatures and heavy-weapon platforms by their smaller size and two-legged gait.
Attack pattern: They advance in a slow, steady walk toward the player, firing single bursts or short bursts from their rifle. They do not strafe, do not take cover, and do not use grenades. Their AI is deliberately simple: walk forward, shoot, die. In groups of ten or more they create a genuine bullet-density problem, especially in narrow corridors or enclosed arenas.
First appearance: Serious Sam: The First Encounter (2001), where they appear from the earliest outdoor levels and continue through every subsequent area. They carry over into The Second Encounter, Serious Sam 2, and Serious Sam 3: BFE, sometimes with minor visual reskins or slightly adjusted fire rates, but the core behavior remains identical.
Variants: In later titles, heavier infantry variants (sometimes called Heavy Troopers or similar) share the same silhouette but carry shotguns or heavier rifles and have increased health. The base Ground Trooper, however, remains the weakest human enemy in every iteration.
Did You Know?
- The Ground Trooper is typically the first enemy type the player ever encounters in a new Serious Sam game, making them the franchise's de facto tutorial enemy.
- Despite being the weakest enemy, a sufficiently large group of Ground Troopers can still overwhelm the player if ammunition runs low, which is a deliberate design choice to reward efficient weapon use.
- Their AI is intentionally minimal—no flanking, no cover-taking, no special abilities—so that the player's challenge comes from numbers and positioning rather than reading complex enemy behavior.
- The Ground Trooper appears in every major Serious Sam title spanning over two decades, making them one of the longest-running enemy designs in the franchise.
