Alien Marine
The faceless, armored foot-soldier that floods every street in a relentless swarm.
The Alien Marine is the standard infantry unit of the alien army that invades Earth throughout the Serious Sam franchise. Visually, it presents as a humanoid alien in bulky, military-style armor wielding a rifle or similar firearm, and it serves as the most numerous and frequently encountered enemy across the series. These soldiers fight in dense swarms, filling the screen in waves that define the core 'bullet-hell' feel of the games.
From the very first title through the most recent entries, the Alien Marine (often simply called the Grunt) remains the baseline threat against which every other enemy is measured. They are not particularly tough individually, but their sheer numbers, coordinated flanking, and the pressure of being shot at from multiple angles make them a persistent nuisance throughout every campaign.

Lore & Background
The alien army that descends upon Earth in the Serious Sam universe is not a single, unified military in the way human nations organize. The Alien Marines are the lowest rung of that hierarchy: conscripted or manufactured foot-soldiers whose sole purpose is to overwhelm human positions through volume. They carry standardized alien firearms, wear overlapping plates of dark, chitin-like armor, and move with a shambling, insectoid gait that makes them easy to spot yet hard to pick off in a crowd.
In the broader narrative of the series, these soldiers serve under heavier units—Mages who hurl energy bolts, Trolls and Golems that close to melee range, and the various named bosses that anchor each act. The Marines are the tide that keeps the player's crosshair busy while the larger threats circle or charge. Their design philosophy across every entry is the same: they should be numerous, visually consistent, and immediately readable at the edge of the screen so the player can triage threats in a split second.
Croteam has refined the Alien Marine's model, animation set, and AI behavior in each successive title, but the core identity has never changed. Whether rendered in the low-polygon aesthetic of the early 2000s or the more detailed assets of the later entries, the Alien Marine remains the visual shorthand for 'alien horde' in the franchise.
In Their Own Story
The sky over the coastal road was the colour of a bruise. Sam racked the shotgun, felt the familiar weight settle into his hands, and watched the tree line ripple. First one, then three, then a dozen—armoured shapes pouring over the ridge in a grey-green tide, rifles raised, shambling forward with that loping, six-jointed gait. The nearest one was already close enough to see the dull sheen of its visor, the way its barrel tracked him with mechanical patience. He fired. The first one went down in a spray of black ichor. The others did not stop. They never stop. Sam grinned, pumped the shotgun, and stepped into the swarm.
Reader's Guide
Visual identity and role: The Alien Marine is the default alien foot-soldier in every Serious Sam title. It is a humanoid figure in dark, segmented body armour with a bulky chest plate, a narrow visor or face-plate, and a rifle slung at the hip or held in a ready stance. In a swarm, hundreds of identical silhouettes fill the environment, making them the visual backbone of every encounter.
Attack pattern: The Marine advances in a straight or slightly arcing line toward the player, firing short bursts from its rifle at medium range. In groups, they flank and converge, creating overlapping lines of fire. They do not use cover, do not reload in a visible animation, and have no special abilities—pure volume and pressure.
First appearance: The Alien Marine (as the Grunt) is present from the very first level of Serious Sam: The First Encounter and recurs in every subsequent title, including The Second Encounter, Serious Sam II, Serious Sam 3: BFE, and Serious Sam 4.
Variants and upgrades: The most common variant is the Heavy Grunt (or Heavy Marine), a larger, more armoured version that takes more hits and sometimes wields a heavier weapon. In later titles, AI improvements mean Marines will attempt to strafe or break line-of-sight briefly, and their spawn density increases in later acts. No dedicated counter-weapon exists; any firearm works, but shotguns and close-range weapons are most efficient against dense packs.
Did You Know?
- The Alien Marine is the single most frequently spawned enemy across the entire franchise, often making up the majority of any given level's enemy count.
- Croteam has re-modelled and re-animated the Marine in every major title, yet the core silhouette—armoured humanoid with a rifle—has remained recognisable since 2001.
- In the earlier titles, the Marines' AI was notably simple: a direct line toward the player. Later entries added basic strafing and group-coordination behaviours.
- The Heavy Grunt variant, while visually similar, is a distinct enemy type with separate hit-point values and sometimes a different weapon, making it a noticeable step up in difficulty.
