Alien Drone

A hovering eye in the swarm, raining bolts on everything that breathes.

Alien Drone

The Alien Drone is a recurring aerial enemy in the Serious Sam franchise, developed by Croteam. It is a hovering, insectoid alien combatant that forms part of the extraterrestrial army invading Earth. Drones typically operate in small packs, maintaining altitude while raining energy projectiles down on Serious Sam and any allied forces.

As a mid-tier threat, the Drone sits between the ground-based Grunts and the heavier, more durable alien units. Its primary tactical value to the alien army is aerial harassment: it forces the player to manage vertical threats while dealing with ground enemies simultaneously, a core pillar of the series' chaotic combat design.

Lore & Background

The alien armada that descends upon Earth in the Serious Sam universe fields a wide variety of biological and mechanical combat units, and the Drone is one of its most ubiquitous aerial assets. Designed for sustained hovering fire, the Drone does not engage in close-quarters combat; instead it holds position above the battlefield, firing bursts of energy at the highest-priority target it can lock onto. In the games' narrative framing, these units are disposable elements of a vast invasion force that values numbers and coordinated pressure over individual durability.

Across the franchise, the Drone's role remains consistent even as the visual design and level design evolve. It is rarely encountered alone; the alien command structure deploys them in threes or fives, weaving between structures and over water to deny the player safe angles. Their presence in a wave signals that the encounter is shifting from a straightforward ground gunfight to a three-dimensional engagement, a shift that defines the series' identity as a shooter.

The Drone's place in the alien hierarchy is that of a supporting specialist. It lacks the brute force of a Heavy or the armored resilience of a Tank, but its altitude and projectile speed make it a persistent nuisance that punishes players who ignore vertical threats. In later entries, upgraded or larger variants appear that fire faster or carry more health, but the core identity—hover, aim, shoot, repeat—remains the franchise's signature aerial threat.

In Their Own Story

The desert wind carried the smell of ozone and scorched metal. Sam wiped grit from his visor and checked the magazine on his shotgun, the barrel still warm from the last Grunt he'd put down. Above him, three shadows broke through the dust haze—Drones, their angular frames catching the low sun, wings of translucent membrane beating in slow, deliberate rhythm. They fanned out in a loose arc, hovering at the height of the ruined watchtower, and the first one tilted its head-plate toward him. A thin blue line of energy stitched the air between them, and Sam felt the hair on his forearms lift before the bolt struck the sand at his feet, kicking up a plume of red dust. He didn't flinch. He raised the shotgun, led the middle Drone by a hand's width, and pulled the trigger. The crack of the blast was swallowed by the howling wind. One Drone shuddered, its membrane wings tearing, and it spiraled down into the scrub. The other two banked hard, diving low to break his aim, then climbed back to altitude. Sam exhaled, racked the slide, and waited for them to come back.

Reader's Guide

Visual identity and role in the swarm: The Drone is a compact, angular flying alien with a prominent head-mounted sensor or eye-plate, translucent or membranous wing structures, and a small body that hovers at roughly the height of a standing player or slightly above. It is visually distinct from ground Grunts by its lack of legs and its constant vertical bob. In a wave, Drones occupy the upper layer, forcing the player to tilt the crosshair upward while managing ground threats below.

Attack pattern: The Drone fires short bursts of energy projectiles, typically two to three rounds per volley, then pauses briefly before re-firing. It maintains a preferred hover distance and will bank or dive to reposition if the player strafes. It does not perform melee attacks or charge moves. In larger packs, Drones stagger their firing so that projectiles arrive in a near-continuous stream.

First appearance and recurrence: The Drone appears from the earliest Serious Sam titles and recurs in subsequent entries, sometimes with minor visual or behavioral tweaks. Later games may introduce a larger or faster variant, but the core hover-and-shoot behavior is consistent.

Counterplay: Because the Drone is fragile compared to ground heavies, a well-timed burst from a shotgun, SMG, or rapid-fire rifle can eliminate it in one or two hits. Tracking its bobbing motion is the main mechanical challenge; leading the shot slightly ahead of its drift path is effective. Explosive weapons (rocket launcher, grenade) are overkill but can clear a full pack in one shot if the Drones are clustered.
