The Serious Engine is a proprietary first-person shooter game engine developed in-house by the Croatian studio Croteam, based in Zagreb. It served as the technical backbone for the original Serious Sam (2001), its expansion Serious Sam: The Second Encounter (2002), and the sequel Serious Sam 2 (2005). The engine was designed from the ground up to handle the franchise's signature gameplay: waves of dozens to hundreds of enemies simultaneously, heavy particle effects, and destructible environments, all running on consumer hardware of the early 2000s.
After Serious Sam 2, Croteam transitioned the franchise to licensed engines—Unreal Engine 3 for Serious Sam 3: BFE (2011) and Unreal Engine 4 for Serious Sam 4 (2016)—marking the end of the Serious Engine's active development cycle.
