Alien Commander

Bigger, meaner, and shooting back — the Commander holds the alien line together.

Alien Commander

The Alien Commander is a recurring mid-to-high-tier enemy type in the Serious Sam first-person shooter franchise. Part of the alien invasion force that assaults Sam's various locations across the series, the Commander is a larger, more heavily armored humanoid alien distinguished from the basic Grunt by its size, its projectile-weapon capability, and its greater health pool.

Rather than a single named antagonist with a personal storyline, the Commander functions as a tactical threat within the wave-based combat structure: it anchors the front line of a wave, suppresses the player with sustained energy fire, and must be prioritized before the swarms of smaller aliens overwhelm the player's position.

Lore & Background

The alien species that raids the Earth in the Serious Sam series fields a ranked combat hierarchy. At the bottom are Grunts, fast but fragile melee fighters. Above them sit Spitters and Commanders, which bring ranged firepower to the swarm. The Commander occupies a middle echelon: too tough to be brushed aside by a few shotgun blasts, too numerous to be treated as a unique boss encounter. In the games' narrative framing, these aliens are part of a broader extraterrestrial military that views Earth as a conquest target, and the Commander is the rank-and-file officer who keeps the lower ranks in formation.

Across the series the Commander's visual design shifts with the art style of each title, but the core silhouette remains: a bulky, insectoid-humanoid alien with a broad torso, heavy shoulder plating, and a weaponized forearm or chest emitter that glows with charged energy. Its gait is slower than a Grunt's, giving the player a brief window to reposition, but its projectile speed and volume of fire make it a persistent suppression threat, especially when multiple Commanders open fire in concert during a large wave.

In later entries the Commander is sometimes paired with or upgraded into heavier variants (such as the Tank class), but the base Commander remains a staple of the alien roster, ensuring that every Serious Sam player encounters the same fundamental challenge: a wall of alien bodies with a few of them shooting back.

In Their Own Story

The dust on the cracked asphalt was still settling from the last Grunt's fall. Sam racked his shotgun, the click sharp in the humid air. Then the ground trembled — not the quick scuttle of the small ones, but a slow, deliberate thud. A shadow detached itself from the column of alien walkers ahead. Broader. Taller. The chest plate flickered, a blue-white charge blooming behind the emitter slit. The Commander locked its gaze on him, and the swarm behind it parted, giving it a clear lane. Sam dropped to one knee behind the overturned truck, counted the seconds between its shots, and waited for the opening he knew would come. It always does.

Reader's Guide

The Commander is instantly recognizable by its bulk: a wider torso, heavier shoulder and chest plating, and a glowing emitter on the forearm or chest that distinguishes it from the smaller, unarmored Grunts. In a wave it typically stands slightly behind the front line, using its range to suppress while Grunts close in.

Its attack pattern is a burst of one to three energy projectiles fired in a short volley, followed by a brief reload window. The projectiles are fast but travel in a straight line, so lateral movement or a quick dodge between bursts is effective. It has noticeably more health than a Grunt, so a single shotgun blast will not drop it; sustained fire or a concentrated burst from a shotgun at close range is the reliable kill method. A rocket or grenade can also finish it quickly if you have the ammo.

The Commander first appears in the original Serious Sam (1999) and recurs in Serious Sam 2, Serious Sam 3: BFE, and Serious Sam 4. In later entries it may appear in slightly upgraded color variants or with marginally increased health, but the core fight — dodge the volley, close the gap, burst-fire — remains consistent.

Tip: when a wave contains multiple Commanders, focus-fire one at a time. Letting two or three build up their charge simultaneously will overwhelm your dodge window, especially in the tighter corridors of later levels.
