The Beach

Paradise by day, a slaughterhouse by the next wave.

The Beach

The Beach is a tropical, open-air stage in the Serious Sam franchise, most prominently featured in Serious Sam: The First Encounter (2001), developed by Croteam. It serves as one of the game's mid-early levels, dropping the player into a sun-bleached coastal environment where the usual large-scale alien and mechanical assault erupts across sand, shallow surf, and scattered palm groves.

The level functions as a tonal contrast to the game's urban and temple settings: the bright palette and open sightlines give way to relentless, multi-directional enemy waves that turn a postcard landscape into a kill zone. It showcases the series' signature design loop—clearing successive waves, grabbing upgenuine weapons, and pushing forward toward the next checkpoint.

Lore & Background

In the Serious Sam universe, the alien incursion is not confined to cities or ancient ruins; it spills onto coastlines, turning idyllic shorelines into front lines. The Beach stage reflects this indiscriminate nature of the threat: no location is safe, and the contrast between the calm turquoise water and the chaos of dozens of enemies converging from land and sea is a recurring visual motif in the franchise.

The level's design leans into the series' broader theme of overwhelming odds. Sam arrives with a modest loadout and must scavenge the beach for heavier weaponry—shotguns, rocket launchers, and the ever-present minigun—while enemies pour in from multiple vectors. The open terrain means the player cannot simply hide; cover is limited to rocks, shipwreck debris, and the occasional crumbling structure half-buried in sand.

As with other stages in the First Encounter, the Beach reinforces the narrative that Sam is a lone, stubborn force of destruction standing between the invaders and the rest of the world. There is no army, no backup—just a man, a growing arsenal, and an endless tide of enemies washing up on the shore.

In Their Own Story

The sand is still warm from the afternoon sun. Sam crouches behind a half-sunk fishing boat, the minigun's barrel still ticking as it cools. Out in the shallows, the water churns—something large is wading in, and behind it, a line of them stretches to the horizon. The palms sway. A gull cries once, then goes silent. He racks the magazine, checks the sky, and steps back into the open. The beach is going to be a very different color by the time the last one falls.

Reader's Guide

Tone and palette: The Beach is defined by high-contrast tropical brightness—saturated turquoise water, pale sand, deep-green palm fronds, and a hard midday sun that throws short, sharp shadows. The overall mood is deceptive calm before each wave hits.

Key set-pieces: The player typically moves along a stretch of open shoreline, through a cluster of palm trees that provides brief cover, past scattered debris (crates, a wrecked vehicle, or a small structure), and into shallower water where enemies close the distance. Weapon pickups are placed at natural chokepoints between cover objects.

Hidden lore details: Environmental props—weathered signs, half-buried equipment, or small structures—hint at a civilian presence before the invasion, reinforcing the franchise's theme of a world caught mid-attack.

Introduced in Serious Sam: The First Encounter (2001) by Croteam. The level was carried forward into the Serious Sam: The Random Encounter (2020) remaster, which updated the visual fidelity while preserving the core layout and enemy waves.
