FEV Tank

A rolling fortress of steel and fury that grinds through the swarm to reach you.

FEV Tank

The FEV Tank is a heavily armored vehicle-class enemy encountered in the Serious Sam franchise. It functions as a mid-to-high tier threat within the waves of hostile forces that assault Sam's positions, combining a bulky armored chassis with a rotating turret that delivers sustained fire.

Unlike the smaller grunt-class enemies, the Tank is designed to punish players who rely on close-range brawling, forcing them to maintain distance and break its armor with sustained heavy-weapon fire before it can be destroyed.

Lore & Background

In the Serious Sam universe, the Tank represents the logistical backbone of the enemy assault. Where grunts are expendable shock troops, the Tank is a capital asset—expensive, slow to deploy, and devastating when it arrives. Its presence on a level signals that the enemy has committed heavier resources to the attack, and players are expected to have upgraded their arsenal by the time one rolls into view.

The design philosophy behind the Tank is one of attrition: it does not need to outmaneuver Sam, only to outlast him. Its armor absorbs the damage that would shred lighter enemies, and its turret keeps a constant stream of projectiles incoming, forcing the player to weave, dodge, and pick off the vehicle from a safe angle rather than standing still and spraying.

Across the series, the Tank has appeared in various iterations, sometimes in single units as a late-level challenge and sometimes in small groups during the heaviest waves, where multiple turrets converge on the player's position and demand rapid target-switching and heavy-weapon management.

In Their Own Story

The dust hadn't settled from the last wave when the ground started to hum. Sam wiped blood from his visor and checked the magazine in his shotgun. Two shells. He kicked the empty into the dirt and racked the shotgun rifle from his back.

Through the haze, a shape emerged from behind the ruined overpass—low, wide, bristling with armor plating. The turret swiveled with a hydraulic whine, tracking him across the cracked asphalt. A single round punched the concrete at his feet, sending a spray of gravel into his boots.

"Alright, you ugly thing," Sam muttered, and broke left, sprinting behind a concrete barrier as the turret continued its sweep. He popped up, fired two rounds into the side armor, and dove back. The tank's tracks groaned as it pivoted. He waited. Counted. Popped up again.

The third shot caught the turret joint. A shower of sparks. The tank shuddered, its aim drifting. Sam grinned, loaded the shotgun rifle, and went to work.

Reader's Guide

Visual identity and role: The FEV Tank is immediately recognizable as the largest non-boss vehicle in the swarm—a wide, low-slung armored hull with a centrally mounted rotating turret. It reads as a capital asset: slow, heavily plated, and visually distinct from the smaller grunt-class enemies that surround it. In a wave, it is the anchor that the lighter enemies orbit around.

Attack pattern: The Tank's primary attack is a sustained stream of projectiles from its turret, fired in short bursts as it tracks the player. It does not lunge or charge; it holds position and fires. Its tracks allow slow repositioning, but it is not a speed threat. The key danger is the volume of fire and the armor that shrugs off light-weapon damage.

Where it first appears: The Tank class appears in the Serious Sam series as a mid-to-late tier enemy, typically introduced after the player has encountered grunt-class foes and acquired heavier weapons. It appears in both single-unit encounters and grouped waves in the heaviest sections of a level.

Variants and upgrades: Across the series, the Tank has appeared in slightly different armored configurations, but its core role—slow, armored, turret-based sustained fire—remains consistent. In later entries, players may face multiple Tanks in a single wave, demanding rapid target-switching.

Counter-play: Heavy weapons (shotgun rifle, rocket launcher, minigun) are the most effective counters. Target the turret or the engine area if visible. Maintain lateral movement to avoid the turret's tracking arc, and use cover to break line-of-sight between bursts. Do not stand still and spray; pop, fire, and reposition.
