Alien Soldier

Faceless, armed, and coming at you in waves — the alien army's disposable vanguard.

Alien Soldier

The Alien Soldier is a staple infantry enemy in the Serious Sam franchise, developed by Croteam. These humanoid alien troops form the backbone of the invading alien army that assaults Earth throughout the series. They are the most common ranged threat players face, appearing in large groups across nearly every level in multiple entries.

Unlike the heavier or more exotic alien types, Alien Soldiers are standard-issue foot soldiers: bipedal, armed with energy rifles, and designed to swarm the player in coordinated volleys. They serve as the baseline difficulty enemy against which other, more dangerous alien types are measured.

Lore & Background

In the Serious Sam universe, the alien armada that descends upon Earth is not a single species but a coalition of alien types, each filling a tactical niche. The Alien Soldiers occupy the most numerous and least specialized role: they are the conscripted infantry, the expendable ranks that fill the sky and the ground in overwhelming numbers. Their design is deliberately humanoid — two legs, two arms, a torso — but the proportions are wrong, the skin is a dull greyish-green, and their eyes glow with a faint bioluminescence that marks them as non-human at a glance.

Their energy rifles are crude but effective, lobbing slow-moving bolts that the player must dodge or destroy before they connect. In the early games, a single Alien Soldier is trivial; in the later entries, where they spawn in dozens alongside heavies, spitters, and other threats, they become a genuine pressure point, forcing the player to manage bullet-hell patterns while dealing with higher-priority targets.

Croteam has kept the Alien Soldier visually consistent across the series while refining their AI and spawn density. They remain the visual shorthand for 'alien army' in the franchise's marketing and key art, often shown in the background of promotional material swarming behind larger, more iconic alien types.

In Their Own Story

The sky over the canyon was already choked with them. Sam cracked his neck, racked the shotgun, and watched the ridge line ripple with grey-green shapes. Dozens. Maybe a hundred. All of them raising those ugly rifles in unison, the barrels whining to charge. He grinned the way he always did — not with fear, with the particular hunger of a man who has been waiting for a good fight. The first bolt left the nearest soldier's muzzle, a lazy orange streak he swatted aside with a shotgun blast that turned the alien into a spray of black ichor. The other ninety-nine kept firing. He kept moving. The canyon echoed.

Reader's Guide

Visually, the Alien Soldier is the most recognizable enemy silhouette in the series: a stocky, bipedal humanoid with grey-green skin, a broad torso, and a glowing-eyed head. They carry a single energy rifle held at the hip or shoulder. In the swarm, they are the mid-range chaff — not the slow, tanky heavies, not the lobbing spitters, but the steady stream of straight-line projectiles that fills the air between you and the next threat.

Their attack pattern is straightforward: they lock onto the player, pause briefly to aim, then fire a single slow-moving bolt. In larger groups they stagger their shots, creating a near-continuous curtain of projectiles. They do not flinch, do not take cover, and do not reposition. They simply keep firing until destroyed.

They first appear in Serious Sam: The First Encounter (2001) and remain a core enemy through Serious Sam 2 and subsequent entries. Across the series they are largely consistent in role, though spawn density and AI responsiveness have increased in later titles. They are best handled with spread weapons (shotguns, chainguns) to clear groups quickly, or with fast, accurate hits from rifles to pop them before their bolts land. No special counter is needed; they are designed to be shot, in volume.
