Fighter Jet

Grab the stick, punch through the canyon, and let the guns do the talking.

Fighter Jet

The Fighter Jet is a vehicle-based combat segment in the Serious Sam series, most prominently featured in Serious Sam 2 (2005) and its later HD remake, Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter (2010). Developed by Croteam, the jet is not a traditional pickup weapon you carry between levels; rather, it is a dedicated flying sequence in which the player pilots a single-seat fighter through a canyon or open-air corridor, engaging waves of alien enemies with the jet's mounted machine guns.

Its role in the campaign is that of a breather and spectacle set-piece: after extended ground combat, the player takes the controls of the jet for a sustained aerial strafing run. The segment rewards aggressive forward movement and sustained fire rather than the cover-based, weapon-swap gameplay that defines the rest of the series.

Lore & Background

In the world of Serious Sam, the alien horde led by the Dark One has already proven that no amount of ground firepower is enough to stop an invasion. When the campaign calls for a change of altitude, the player is handed the controls of a purpose-built fighter jet—a stubby, single-engine craft bristling with twin nose-mounted machine guns. The jet is not a military asset in any traditional sense; it is a tool of desperate improvisation, cobbled together to give Sam a fighting chance against swarms that would otherwise pour over the canyon rim.

The flight path is deliberately tight: the canyon walls close in, forcing the pilot to thread between rock faces while keeping the guns on target. Enemies—often fast, small drones and larger ground units—pop up from ledges and tunnels below, creating a rhythm of strafe, bank, strafe. The jet's handling is responsive but unforgiving; clip a wall and the sequence is over, sending the player back to the start of the segment.

Croteam designed the segment as a tonal shift. Where the rest of Serious Sam is a chaotic, multi-weapon ground brawl, the jet sequence strips the experience down to one vehicle, one gun, and a forward-moving corridor. It is the series' answer to the classic "fly the jet" arcade moment, filtered through the franchise's signature over-the-top enemy density.

In Their Own Story

The canyon smells of ozone and scorched rock. Sam grips the yoke, feels the twin guns hum to life beneath the nose cone, and pushes the throttle forward. The jet lurches, then surges into the narrow throat of the pass. A swarm of drones peels off the cliff face ahead, chittering in unison. He banks left, pulls the trigger, and the tracers stitch a ragged line through the air. The first drone explodes in a puff of green smoke. The second doesn't. It clips his wingtip, and the jet shudders. He corrects, keeps the guns on, and the canyon rolls by in a blur of grey stone and alien fire. Ahead, the light at the end of the pass is getting closer. He doesn't slow down.

Reader's Guide

Silhouette and feel: the Fighter Jet is a compact, single-seat craft with a stubby fuselage and twin nose-mounted machine guns. Firing is a sustained, full-auto burst—there is no reload, no magazine swap, just a continuous stream of tracers as long as you hold the trigger. The handling is arcade-tight: responsive banking, a slight forward drift, and a hard penalty for clipping the canyon walls.

Damage profile and ammo: the guns deal moderate per-round damage but compensate with a very high rate of fire. There is no ammo counter; the guns cycle for the duration of the segment. The jet itself has a small health pool—wall collisions and enemy fire will eventually bring it down, restarting the sequence.

First appearance: the jet segment appears in a mid-campaign level of Serious Sam 2 (and carries over into Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter). It is triggered by reaching the jet's hangar and is not available as a carry-over weapon in subsequent levels.

Fan verdict: a crowd-pleaser. It's short, loud, and satisfying in a pure arcade sense, and most players remember it fondly as the "jet level." It doesn't compete with the rest of the arsenal because it isn't part of it.

Version notes: the HD remake updated the visuals and enemy models but kept the core flight path and gun behavior essentially identical to the 2005 original. No significant stat rebalancing was applied to the jet segment between versions.
