APC
Hop in, stomp through the horde, and let the big gun do the talking.
The APC (Armored Personnel Carrier) is a player-controlled armored vehicle that appears in dedicated vehicle sections across the Serious Sam franchise. Rather than being a handheld weapon you carry between levels, it functions as a temporary, section-specific mount: Sam hops in, drives through a gauntlet of alien enemies while firing a heavy turret cannon, and dismounts at the end of the segment.
It serves as a pacing change from the series' signature run-and-gun, giving players a slower, heavier, area-of-effect feel while still demanding constant movement and target prioritization. The APC is a staple of the franchise's vehicle interludes and is one of the few non-pedestrian ways to fight through a level.

Lore & Background
In the Serious Sam universe, the APC is a standard-issue military armored vehicle repurposed for the defense of a small town under siege by the alien warlord Balthazar. It does not belong to any single faction; rather, it is part of the local armory that Sam commandeers when the situation demands something heavier than a shotgun.
The vehicle's design reflects the franchise's blend of gritty military hardware and cartoonish scale: a boxy, heavily armored hull with a prominent twin or single-barrel turret that belches smoke with every shot. It is not a sleek sci-fi war machine but a rugged, diesel-chugging workhorse that looks like it was pulled from a 1990s defense catalogue and dropped into an alien invasion.
Across the various entries, the APC appears in short, self-contained vehicle levels where the camera shifts to a third-person tracking shot behind the vehicle. The player's job is to keep the hull alive, pick off priority targets, and survive the scripted gauntlet. It is always a temporary mount—Sam will not be found driving it into the finale.
In Their Own Story
The engine coughs, catches, and roars to life. Through the slit in the armored hatch, Sam can see the street ahead already crawling with Balthazar's drones, their chitinous legs clicking against the asphalt. He slams the hatch shut, feels the vibration of the idling diesel in his boots, and grips the turret controls.
The first shot is thunderous. The barrel kicks, the whole hull lurches sideways, and a cluster of drones simply ceases to exist in a spray of green fluid and sparking parts. He grins. The second shot, the third—each one a small earthquake. The APC plows forward, tires screaming, and Sam weaves between the alien wreckage, the turret tracking left, right, left, a metronome of destruction.
Then the horn blares. The road ahead is clear. He kills the engine, pops the hatch, and steps back onto solid ground, the smell of burnt diesel and alien ichor hanging in the hot air. He cracks his neck, pulls his shotgun from the rack, and walks on. The APC sits behind him, silent, already forgotten.
Reader's Guide
Silhouette and firing feel: The APC presents as a low-slung, boxy armored hull with a prominent turret on top. The cannon is slow to cycle; each shot has a noticeable wind-up, a heavy recoil kick, and a visible muzzle flash that lights up the surrounding area. You are not spraying bullets—you are placing deliberate, high-impact shots. Steering is sluggish compared to on-foot movement, so lead your turns and avoid tight corridors.
Damage profile: The turret cannon deals very high per-shot damage with a wide splash or cone area of effect, making it excellent against clustered drones and medium-tier enemies. It is less effective against single, fast-moving targets that can strafe out of the blast radius. The hull has a finite health pool; sustained fire from heavy enemies will destroy the vehicle and end the section early.
Ammo: The cannon uses a dedicated vehicle shell supply that is generous for the length of the section but not infinite. You do not reload mid-drive; the supply is fixed for the duration.
First appearance: The APC appears in dedicated vehicle levels across multiple Serious Sam titles, including the Second Encounter and its HD remake, as well as later entries. It is not a drop you find mid-level; it is the centerpiece of its own scripted segment.
Fan verdict: A crowd-pleaser for the change of pace and the sheer satisfaction of the big gun, though some players wish the sections were longer. It is a niche pick in the sense that you only get it for a few minutes per playthrough, but those minutes are memorable.
Version notes: The HD remakes updated the vehicle's textures, lighting, and particle effects while keeping the core handling and damage feel largely intact. Serious Sam 4 reinterprets the vehicle section with updated physics and a different visual style, but the fundamental 'drive, shoot, dismount' structure remains.
Did You Know?
- The APC is always a temporary mount—no Serious Sam title lets you keep the vehicle and drive it into the next level or the finale.
- The vehicle sections are scripted gauntlets: the enemy spawn patterns and the route are fixed, so the challenge is reactive rather than exploratory.
- In the HD remakes, the APC's turret smoke and muzzle-flash lighting were reworked to take advantage of higher-resolution particle systems, making each shot visually more impactful than in the 2002 originals.
- The APC's boxy, utilitarian design is a deliberate contrast to the more exotic alien tech Sam fights, reinforcing the 'human military hardware vs. alien swarm' theme of the series.
